KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM

As part of our Educating Children with Christ in Mind program, kindergarten students will attend chapel bimonthly for a bible story puppet show complete with songs and prayer.

PHONICS

We are pleased to incorporate Saxon K. Phonics into our kindergarten curriculum. In Phonics K students will learn the sound, name and written form of each letter. A daily review of taught letters ensures sufficient exposure to and mastery of each letter. Students learn to create words by blending sounds, and to spell by unblending sounds. They will participate in games and activities that will motivate them and reinforce skills.

SIGHT WORDS

Dolch Sight Word Lists are used as a supplement to our reading program. Our goal is that the student not only be able to read the words from a list, but recognize the same word in a written sentence. We use a variety of books, activities and games to practice and review sight words.

READING
Children will listen to books, both fiction and non-fiction, relating to our theme unit. As they develop reading skills, students will read from an assortment of phonics books, sight word books and leveled readers.
HANDWRITING
Kindergarten students will learn good handwriting skills using a variety of materials and techniques. Before students practice writing the letter on paper, they will learn proper letter formation using “air sharpies”, play dough and magnetic drawing boards. Students learn the correct letter formation of the Zaner Bloser Manuscript as well as proper hand placement and writing posture.
MATH
The school uses the Kindergarten Color Math Curriculum (Mcruffy Press). This interactive math program utilizes auditory, visual and tactile methods to develop skills. Using the activities in this curriculum, students will learn numbers, counting, continuing patterns, money, time, simple addition & subtraction, geometrical designs, odd and even numbers and place value. These concepts are reinforced throughout our day, especially during group time and center time.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Topics covered throughout the year will include United States history through the study of important American symbols and holidays, good citizenship and positive character traits, community workers, transportation and safety, and maps and globes.
SCIENCE
Kindergartners will learn about Health Science through topics such as The Five Senses, Dental Health and Nutrition. Physical Science will include Properties of Water, Magnets and Sink/Float experiments. For Life Science, students will learn about Animals, Plants, Bugs and Insects. As part of Earth Science, we will have units on Space, Rocks and Minerals, and Weather.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
Students will enjoy extra enrichment programs held at the school such as visits from the local fire department.
